The term "Bedrock Edition" originates from the Bedrock codebase, which was created in the C++ programming language to run on platforms that cannot support Java. Code was added to accommodate differences in the target platforms for such facilities as networking and storage access, though around 90% of the code is used on every platform.[citation nee...

Up until June 7, 2022, the name "Bedrock Edition" was not the official name of any edition of the game. Starting with the Better Together Update, all Bedrock editions of Minecraft have been named simply Minecraft. Before then, they each had a subtitle identifying the target platform, including Pocket Edition (for all mobile platforms), Windows 10 E...

The objective of the game remains the same as its Java Edition and Legacy Console Edition counterparts, where players can build virtual realities in a sandbox-like environment. Like them, Bedrock Edition has survival elements such as hunger and brewing, and the Nether and the End dimensions. The multiplayermode is cross-platform compatible between ...

Although all Bedrock editions are nearly identical, the price[note 1] varies depending on the platform. The Android, iOS/iPadOS, and Fire versions cost US$6.99 (£6.99), while the ChromeOS, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 versions cost US$19.99 (£19.99, £16.74, and £12.99 respectively). Bedrock Edition has been in development since August 16, 2011, and was called Minecraft: Pocket Edition at the time. Bedrock Edition was in Alpha until November 18, 2016, when the game was fully released. Upon the release of Bedrock Edition 1.2.0, the "Pocket Edition" subtitle was dropped and the edition was ...

  3. Jan 31, 2024 · A major difference between Java and Bedrock is the world format. Bedrock uses the LevelDB format for world storage, while Java uses the Anvil format. Due to this, most third-party tools created for editing a world will only work in the version for which it was created. The two versions also use a fairly different block format.

    • Mods. While both versions of Minecraft support mods—Bedrock calls them addons and has recently expanded them—Java has far more options. Importantly, Minecraft Java mods tend to be free, while Bedrock add-ons can be either free or paid downloads in the Minecraft Marketplace.
    • Cost. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition are sold together nowadays for a set price of $29.99. Unlike the old days, you’ll get both versions of Minecraft in one neat package and a unified launcher, so you can swap between them at will.
    • Controls. Both versions support mouse and keyboard, but only one supports controllers. Despite releasing all the way back in 2010, Mojang hasn’t implemented controller support for Java Edition.
    • Crossplay. One of the key selling points Microsoft loves to remind us about was that Minecraft is "better together," which is simply not true if you’ve ever played with your kids and watched helplessly as they TNT a structure you’ve spent hours building.
  4. Jun 15, 2020 · While the Bedrock Edition does have add-ons, it features more paid content to add to the game, whereas the Java version lets you install mods (such as texture packs) for free. If you’re planning ...
