      • Bedrock is better for cross-platform play The Bedrock Edition allows for cross-platform multiplayer on consoles, mobile devices, and Windows 10. The Java Edition is only for PC, and it will only allow you to play with other Java players, which is a lot more limiting.

If you're playing on a console or mobile device--an Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or Android/iOS device, you'll be playing Bedrock. If you're one of the few and proud that plays on a Linux device, you're going to be playing Java. So we'll assume those players already know what they want and focus on the rest of us playing on Windows 10 and 11 PCs.

So, all of your friends play Minecraft, but some of them play on PC, others play on Xbox, and some are even playing on their mobile devices. There are a couple of options for cross-play. With Minecraft Bedrock, you can hook up with them whenever you like for a single-session multiplayer game--you can join your friend's game, but only while they're ...

You're not one to just leave a game the way it was installed. You want to make it your own. That doesn't mean just skins and texture packs, but total overhaul mods that introduce new game mechanics, shader packs, and more. If that sounds like you, you'll want to play Java Edition.

The older your computer is, the more leeway you'll need to give it with games. Minecraft is anything but new, but Bedrock tends to run better on older systems due to Java's generally poor optimization. Of course, Java will most likely run fine--but Bedrock Edition will give you a little more elbow room. Generally speaking, if you want the most stab...

If you want the most advanced graphical effects and prefer they be of the officially supported variety, Minecraft Bedrock Edition offers full integration with Nvidia's ray tracing and upscaling features. Ray tracing allows you to enjoy all kinds of light effects that completely change the way the game looks, while Nvidia's DLSSupscaling helps keep ...

While Bedrock Edition is the lead platform for Microsoft and Mojang, Java Edition is still under active development, and due most likely to it having a smaller player base (remember, PC only) that's generally more tolerant of changes, Java will often get upcoming and experimental features first. If you want to see all that new stuff before it makes...

    • Mods. While both versions of Minecraft support mods—Bedrock calls them addons and has recently expanded them—Java has far more options. Importantly, Minecraft Java mods tend to be free, while Bedrock add-ons can be either free or paid downloads in the Minecraft Marketplace.
    • Cost. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition are sold together nowadays for a set price of $29.99. Unlike the old days, you’ll get both versions of Minecraft in one neat package and a unified launcher, so you can swap between them at will.
    • Controls. Both versions support mouse and keyboard, but only one supports controllers. Despite releasing all the way back in 2010, Mojang hasn’t implemented controller support for Java Edition.
    • Crossplay. One of the key selling points Microsoft loves to remind us about was that Minecraft is "better together," which is simply not true if you’ve ever played with your kids and watched helplessly as they TNT a structure you’ve spent hours building.
  3. As for the version you wanna play, it depends, if you're looking for the version you see online most of the time it is minecraft Java edition, or Bedrock edition. I would recommend java as it is the original and is usually more polished, bedrock is meant more for phones and consoles.

  4. Oct 14, 2020 · Verdict: I’m just starting out, which version should I choose? I’d say if you are about to play your first game of Minecraft and you are on Windows 10, then it makes sense to play with the Bedrock build. It’s a no-brainer if you already have an RTX card or thinking about upgrading in the near future.
