Base game is all you need if you only want Java so he's right. Deluxe edition only gives you packs, minecoins, and skin stuff in Bedrock which if you don't play you'll never see/use because Java doesn't have a marketplace or cosmetics so if you only play Java and want mods its a waste of 10$. TLDR; Just get the base game, don't get deluxe.
