Oct 25, 2021 · Minecraft: Java Edition is only available on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Minecraft: Bedrock Edition is available on Windows 10 and 11, Xbox One, Xbox Series S and X, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS, and Windows Mobile. Can I get both Java and Bedrock Edition?
If you have bought the bedrock for PC, on a PC, with a Microsoft account, you should be able to just download and play java from the launcher. Now, I think you need the official launcher from the Microsoft store and not the one from minecraft.net
It is pretty bad they can't play together, but there's a plugin in Java edition, (Good luck getting that to Bedrock), that allows Bedrock players to connect to a Java server. However, it only allows mobile and PC Bedrock versions to play together, since console doesn't allow IPs.
- Mods. While both versions of Minecraft support mods—Bedrock calls them addons and has recently expanded them—Java has far more options. Importantly, Minecraft Java mods tend to be free, while Bedrock add-ons can be either free or paid downloads in the Minecraft Marketplace.
- Cost. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition are sold together nowadays for a set price of $29.99. Unlike the old days, you’ll get both versions of Minecraft in one neat package and a unified launcher, so you can swap between them at will.

Jun 4, 2022 · Starting June 7, all players that have either Java Edition or Bedrock Edition will receive the edition they do not currently own for free, right in the Minecraft Launcher. So if you own Java, you’ll get Bedrock – and vice versa.
Jul 15, 2024 · I’d say if you are about to play your first game of Minecraft and you are on Windows 10, then it makes sense to play with the Bedrock build. It’s a no-brainer if you already have an RTX card or thinking about upgrading in the near future.
