  1. Jun 7, 2024 · Good open world games thrive on their power to make you wonder 'what's over there?', and all too often repeating mechanics like towers to climb and enemy bases to clear mean you already know.

    • Elden Ring. Since its earliest days, the driving force behind the evolution of the open-world genre has been “go bigger.” Not long after a major new open-world game is announced, people rush to figure out how big its map is and how much there is to do in it.
    • Red Dead Redemption 2. Red Dead Redemption was an incredible “GTA with horses” experience that expertly invoked the thrills of high-octane Western films like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, High Noon, and The Magnificent Seven.
    • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The Witcher 3 really spoiled us. One corner of this game’s open-world is bountiful and beautiful enough to justify being the setting for a separate game, just as most of this game’s characters could easily be the heroes and villains of their own RPG.
    • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was, pardon the pun, a breath of fresh air for the Zelda franchise. Audiences had complained about the ever-growing “handholdy” nature of the series, so Nintendo listened to those criticisms and developed a title that emphasized freedom and exploration.
    • Genshin Impact. When Genshin Impact was first released back in 2020, many gamers were quick to remark upon its many resemblances to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – which is a very flattering comparison, considering that BOTW is one of the greatest open-world games of all time.
    • Tower of Fantasy. This MMO action RPG borrows a lot from Genshin Impact, so if you loved that game, you’ll probably love this one too. It’s one of those scenarios where the formula was so good that it only made sense for another developer to take another crack at it – and that’s not to say is completely derivative, either.
    • Elden Ring. Elden Ring is a masterclass evolution of the Souls-like genre of hardcore action RPG games and is considered one of the best PC games ever. A large part of Elden Ring’s success can be attributed to the new open world, which gives the player the freedom to explore and tackle quests, bosses, and dungeons in whatever order they please.
    • Halo Infinite. Halo Infinite has made a pretty masterful transition into an open world. It brings out the best of Halo: Combat Evolved’s previous glory, while also bringing a new experience for veteran players.
    • Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Why you can trust Tom's Guide Our writers and editors spend hours analyzing and reviewing products, services, and apps to help find what's best for you.
    • Starfield. Starfield offers players an entire galaxy full of planets to explore. Developed by Bethesda Games Studio, the team behind The Elder Scrolls and Fallout (Which both feature later on this list), Starfield is one of the most ambitious open-world games ever made.
    • Batman: Arkham City. Batman: Arkham City represents the first time the franchise attempted a true open-world design. The previous game, Batman: Arkham Asylum, was more of a Metroidvania, which put Batman in a closed environment that slowly opened up as he gathered better gear.
    • Death Stranding. If you like your open-world games deeply weird and somewhat inscrutable, then Death Stranding is probably the game for you. You play as Sam Porter Bridges, who is essentially a deliveryman on a post-apocalyptic Earth.
