New Vegas is my favorite fallout game but I think that 3 is a great RPG. Fallout 3 isn't a direct sequel in terms of lore/setting but it keeps a more similar basic story pattern to the classics than new Vegas does.
As a game, Fallout 3 is pretty darn good. It was a good translation of a lot of the systems from Fallout 1+2 and updated the genre so it was more accessible to younger gamers and those who were fans of first person games instead of top down isometric turn based games.

Highly recommend if you like the fall out universe. It’s my favorite. 3 is definitely the clunkiest out of the modern games, and has a lot of weird balance problems. But there is probably no game in the series that is more "post-apocalyptic", with every other game being more "post-post-apocalyptic".
