For it to work, you must download and run a BUKKIT server like hedonismbot_tf2 said, but you must have an offline-mode username assignment program, otherwise, everyone will automatically be named "player" (since minecraft.com wasn't able to verify your usernames since you don't have internet connection), and there can only be one person named "player" on a server at a time.
