Alexander Zemlinsky, composer and conductor, was born in Vienna to a Slovakian Catholic father and mother of mixed Sephardic Jewish–Muslim descent. He played piano and organ from a young age and was admitted to the Vienna Conservatory in 1884 to study piano and composition under Anton Door, Franz Krenn, and the brothers Robert and Johann Nepomuk Fuchs.
Zemlinsky was a broken man when he arrived in the New World. He even had to abandon his opera and composed only a few minor works. After suffering several strokes Zemlinsky died on 15 March 1942 in his house in Larchmont near New York. For several decades after his death the music of Zemlinsky was more or less disregarded.

Zemlinsky’s earlier career was spent as music director of the Vienna Volksoper, followed by periods in Prague and Berlin. Jewish by birth, he was forced to flee Berlin in 1933 amid the rise of the Nazi party and returned to Vienna, from where he fled in 1938 via Prague to the United States of America, dying there in 1942.
