     Another reason Tube stations flourished in the north was due to the large railway stations built there in the 1800s including Kings Cross, Paddington, Euston and St Pancras.    Why is the London Underground called the tube?

   • The London Underground is often called the Tube because of the shape of the tunnels. The London Underground is one of the oldest metro systems in the world, opening in 1863.
