The funniest part is I used my coworker's iPhone and all it did was send a notification to the MacBook and LET ME RESET THE PASSWORD ON THE ONLY DEVICE I HAVE. So you need a second active Apple device, but no need to verify that you're the one trying to reset the password. I literally did not need to prove my identity to reset the password.
