Funeral and burial of Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln's tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. After Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865, a three-week series of events was held to mourn the death and memorialize the life of the 16th president of the United States.
The 117-foot tall granite tomb contains the bodies of Lincoln, his wife Mary, and three of his four sons -- Edward, William and Thomas (Tad). Robert, the eldest son, planned to be buried in this tomb with his parents and brothers. When his own son, Abraham Lincoln II ("Jack") died at age 16 in 1890, he brought the body to the Lincoln tomb.

Other Burials at the Lincoln Tomb. The Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site is, of course, the location of Abraham Lincoln’s grave. However, the former president is not the only person buried in this monumental setting. The south wall of the burial room features four crypts.
