Not to say it’s bad by any means, I think it’s still an excellent movie. This is also his only film that wasn’t written by him or a combination of him and Jonathan and I think that shows. It’s a fairly straight forward, classic style narrative that we’ve seen for a long time in detective thrillers.
But when I first saw Insomnia a few years back, I really disliked it. I even hated it. I found the plot gibberish and a lot of it boring. Now, craving some comfy snow film, I ended up watching it again. Now after my 2nd viewing, I rank Insomnia as one of my favorite detective movies.
I liked the movie a lot but due to its rather straightforward nature and predictable ending, I would rate it near the bottom of his filmography. But that isn’t an indictment of Insomnia, rather it’s a testament to his other work.
