The Virginia Squires were a basketball team based in Norfolk, Virginia, and playing in several other Virginia cities. They were members of the American Basketball Association from 1970 to 1976. The team originated in 1967 as the Oakland Oaks, an ABA charter franchise based in Oakland, California.

The 1971-72 Virginia Squires were one of the most memorable teams in ABA history. The Squires already had budding superstar Charlie Scott . But they also added an unheralded rookie from the University of Massachusetts, Julius Erving (#32, above left and above middle).
With a trip to the ABA Championship on the line, the Squires and Nets battled back and forth with the home team winning the first six games of the series. However, in Game 7 in Virginia, the Nets defense proved too strong for the Squires as the Nets won the game 94-88.
