Avila is small enough to walk around and all of its major attractions can be found within the walls of the old city or just outside the city walls.

    • The Walls. Ávila’s UNESCO-listed walls are considered among the finest city defences in the world. They have a perimeter of 2.5 kilometres and are never less than three metres-thick.
    • Los Cuatro Postes. This is a pilgrimage site west of the city although nobody can really agree on its origins. One story has it that it was chosen after the plague had passed through the city in the 12th-century.

    • Take in the view from Los Cuarto Postes. Los Cuarto Postes (or the Four Posts) is one of the top attractions in Avila. This 16th-century religious monument shapes like four Doric columns with a canopy.
    • Visit Avila Cathedral. Avila Cathedral is one of the oldest Gothic cathedrals in Spain. The fortress like cathedral was constructed in the 12 century. It’s dedicated to Saint Salvador.
    • Explore the Basílica de San Vicente. Basilica de San Vicente lies just outside the city wall in Avila. Founded in the 11th century, this imposing church is considered one of the finest Romanesque church in Spain.
