Quiet, beautiful, lots of hiking trails, hot springs, and of course the Great Lake itself (and unlike Rotorua, you can actually swim in it!). People are a bit on the conservative side but very friendly. The best place for coffee is, weirdly, the Mitre 10 MEGA store on the outskirts of town.
