“The summer camp represents an exciting next step in Thacher's collaboration with the Turtle Conservancy,” said Dr. Tracy Miller, Thacher’s Director of Studies.
Thacher offers a range of summer programs for toddlers through adolescents. To keep the learning momentum going, we have sessions for all ages. For children aged 2.5 to 6, our eight-week Children’s House program provides a balance between Montessori learning and outdoor adventures/group activities.
The camp, now run as the Golden Trout Wilderness School, offers a diversity of opportunities for high-school students from Thacher and other schools, adults, and families to take part in educational programs in the High Sierra.
Following the launch of Sputnik by the U.S.S.R. in 1957, Thacher’s headmaster, Newton Chase, decided that the most promising high school students – those most capable of careers in science and engineering – were not being adequately inspired to pursue STEM paths.
The Thacher School has operated Golden Trout Camp for over 50 years, connecting thousands of students, alumni, families, and other visitors with the ancient Foxtail pines, endangered Sierra Bighorn Sheep, and a wide range of other unique flora and fauna.
At The Thacher School, students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities, from our one-of-a-kind horse program to our intrepid rock climbing squad, our theater productions to our hands-on astronomy initiatives at the Thacher Observatory.
