In the 1950s Egypt had the biggest economy, an educated elite, a cinema industry. Now it is the Gulf and Levantine world that dominates. In terms of hard power, the fall is even more dramatic. Egypt was once the great hope of the Arab world but in most people’s minds it has disappointed.
