Dorne is a Principality and not a Kingdom, so why include it as one of the Seven Kingdoms instead of the Riverlands, who while not independent at the time of Aegon's Conquest had been independent in the past and were actually a kingdom rather than a principality like Dorne.
May 14, 2014 · It just so happens that when Aegon invaded Westeros, it was split into 7 independent kingdoms - hence the name. Obviously, up to Daeron II's marriage with Dorne, the Targaryens' claim to Dorne (as well as to the title King of the Rhoynar) was completely hollow, but that's a whole other topic. And there weren't always 7 kingdoms.
Although the term refers to seven kingdoms, Dorne was ruled by by a princess instead of a king. Additionally, the term omitted the island "kingdom" of Dragonstone, which was ruled by the sovereign Lords of Dragonstone from House Targaryen, and the lands beyond the Wall.
Dorne is the large peninsula which makes up the southernmost part of Westeros, and is one of the constituent regions of the Seven Kingdoms. The lords of the ruling House Nymeros Martell style themselves " Prince " and "Princess" in the Rhoynish fashion.
