Chinnaswamy Subramania Bharathi (March 11, 1882 – March 11, 1921) was a poet, writer, journalist, freedom fighter and social reformer. He is also known as Bharatiyar and Mahakavi. Bharathi was a pioneer of modern Tamil poetry with an excellent knowledge of Tamil poetry and prose.
He fought for the emancipation of women, against child marriage, vehemently opposed the caste system, and stood for reforming society and religion. Born in Ettayapuram of Tirunelveli district (present-day Thoothukudi) in 1882, Bharati had his early education in Tirunelveli.
More important is the fact that he had the courage and tenacity to stand up before a ruthless imperial power and was prepared to face all the personal consequences. The only weapon he had at his disposal to achieve his cherished goal was not wealth or physical ability but only his literary skill.
