Vladek begins to work in the shop with Miloch, repairing German boots. Though foundational morality has fallen by the wayside, Vladek is still willing and able to identify people in moral terms –he knows that Haskel is a crook and Miloch is a good man, and he makes such judgments even after acknowledging the moral chaos of the times.
Vladek, Anja, and Mandelbaum meet the smugglers at the train station, and they all board the train. After about an hour, however, they are arrested and stripped of their possessions. They have been betrayed by the smugglers. Vladek is made to board a truck with a hundred other prisoners and is transported to Auschwitz.
Miloch is suspicious, and decides to stay at the rubbish pit. Vladek directs Miloch to stay with Mrs. Motonowa once he and Anja leave with the smugglers. Vladek and Anja meet up with the smugglers at a train station in Katowice. They grow suspicious when one of the smugglers disappears to make a phone call, but get on the train anyway.

The story shifts back to the past. In 1943, almost everyone has been taken to Auschwitz. Haskel’s friend Miloch shows Vladek a secret bunker in the shoe workshop and tells him to be ready to come with Anja and Lolek at a moment’s notice. When Vladek tells Lolek about the hiding place, Lolek refuses to go, saying that he’s tired of hiding.
