Chuck Character Analysis. One of the youngest of the Gladers and Thomas’ first friend in the Glade. Most of the Gladers find Chuck annoying because of his childish antics and fondness for practical jokes, but Thomas recognizes that Chuck is a loyal and caring friend.
Chuck asks Thomas why he doesn’t ask Gally what his problem is. Thomas wants to appear brave but tells Chuck that Gally has many more allies in the Glade than he does. Chuck nods but states that he thinks Thomas is smarter and faster than Gally.
Chuck, convinced that Thomas will finally make it out of the Maze, gives Thomas a small figurine as a lucky charm, asking him to tell his parents that he loves them, but Thomas refuses and insists that Chuck will tell them himself.
Why is this important? Because he's going to save Thomas's life at the end of the book, and the author wants us to weep profusely at his sacrifice. Well, that's half of it. Chuck's death is going to be a major turning point for Thomas, but in order for that to work he needs to have endeared himself to us, the readers.
