She was trying to absolve herself of the guilt she felt over Naruto's obsession with redeeming Sasuke. At that point in the series it looked like Naruto and Sasuke would wind up killing each other and if Sakura released Naruto from his promise then they wouldn't die at each others hand.
The main reason we hate Sakura is, in my opinion, the comparative characters. We all like the characters with dark, cool backstories (think naruto or itachi) and we NEVER get that from Sakura. The closest thing we get with her is a dumb story about flowers.
