- Chapter 6
Nath has changed, and so has Lydia—she wants to hurt him, the same impulse that caused her to slap Hannah. Nath’s sudden coldness and cruelty to Lydia reflects his feeling that he needs to make an absolute break with his family in order to be free of them.
Nath both pushed Lydia in and pulled her out, and each of their memories will always focus on a different side of the incident. While it is still not clear how Lydia dies, this scene provides important new information about her death (as well as Nath’s reaction to the loss of his sister).
Hannah, upset and crying, pushes Nathan into the water to make him stop. Momentarily sinking, Nathan thinks about Lydia’s final moments. He wants to let himself drown, but his instinct to swim won’t let him.
Combined with the push and pull of his relationship with Lydia, Nath begins a trajectory away from his family. He wants to leave and put a plan in place to do so, even as he craves encouragement from his family.
After Lydia’s death, Nathan develops a new appreciation for Hannah, and with her help he confronts his rage at Jack, a longstanding antipathy fueled by his suspicions about Jack’s interest in Lydia.
Nath leaves early the next morning, promising to call the next day. Three days pass without news from Nath. Lydia misses him terribly and feels stifled under her parents' undistracted attention. Hannah clings to her, desperate for attention. On Sunday night, Lydia sees Hannah wearing her locket.
