Artificial Light Sources: When certain objects are heated to a high temperature, they begin to emit light. Both infrared and visible light is produced in the process. Example- Candle, incandescent lamp.

Natural light, which produces heat and color, comes from the radiation given off by the sun. It is then filtered through the Earth’s atmosphere and absorbed by plants. Artificial light sources can consist of a filament that uses electricity or halogen gas to glow, or an electronic device that emits light.

Light-emitting diodes produce light by a process called electroluminescence. Although LEDs are coloured, it is possible to combine several LEDs to produce white light. Today, low-power LEDs are used for signs, indicators and Christmas lights. High-power LEDs are used for lighting.

They are used in very specific applications and rarely in conventional indoor lighting. Flash lamps are designed to produce bursts of extremely intense light and are used mostly in photography, scientific, medical and industrial applications. Dielectric-barrier discharge lamps are also used in industry.

Sources of light that are created by humans are called artificial sources of light. Examples are torchlight, electric bulb, candle. Most of these type of sources give light for only a short period of time. The sources which give light on their own are called natural sources of light. Examples are the sun and stars.

Light Bulbs. Electric light bulbs, tube lights, lamps, etc.
Torches. Torches are one of the prominent examples of the artificial sources of light present around us.

Artificial Light is a necessity in our everyday lives. It helps us to work during hours of poor lighting and illuminate our night. Most of the current technology heavily relies on artificial light. This includes smartphones, lamps, televisions, laptops, car lights and etc.

Artificial light creates visual stimulation – we’re always drawn to the brightest point in a room, so we use artificial light to accentuate specific features in the space. In a kitchen, these might be flowers on a kitchen island or dining table which we’ll highlight.

In 1802, Humphry Davy invented the first electric light. He experimented with electricity and invented an electric battery. When he connected wires to his battery and a piece of carbon, the carbon glowed, producing light. His invention was known as the Electric Arc lamp.

The spread of artificial lighting means most of us no longer experience truly dark nights. Research suggests that artificial light at night can negatively affect human health, increasing risks for obesity, depression, sleep disorders, diabetes, breast cancer and more.
