Mar 1, 2017 · Why is nature so healing? One possibility is that having access to nature—either by living near it or viewing it—reduces stress. In a study by Catharine Ward Thompson and her colleagues, the people who lived near larger areas of green space reported less stress and showed greater declines in cortisol levels over the course of the day.
The Benefits of Getting Close to Nature. Humans may have a similar basic need to connect with healthy nature. Just as humans relied on other people to survive and thrive in early evolutionary environments, our ancestors also needed to put themselves into healthy and resource rich environments.
- Nature encourages exercise. With so many enjoyable activities to do outdoors, you won’t even realize how much you’re moving and exercising. Things like gardening, horseback riding, raising chickens, and snowshoeing are a few of my favorite activities that I find fun and get me moving.
- Nature reduces stress and depression. There have been numerous studies on how being in nature helps reduce stress and depression substantially. This can be as simple as going for a walk in your area, riding a bike, or simply being present in a green space.
- Nature encourages family time. Want an easy way to limit screen time? Get outside and in the elements for some quality family time. My son loves being outside, so we take full advantage to play outside together when it’s warm out.
- Nature helps make positive memories. That family time mentioned above helps you create some fun positive memories. Like the time we got to enjoy my son’s first time on the playset my husband built for him, or when the cousins came over and played soccer in the backyard for hours.

- Relieve Stress. Getting outside can help you escape the stress of work or school. Stress can tear up a healthy mind and immune system. High levels of stress at work and school are associated with depression, obesity, and high blood pressure.
- Strengthen Immunity. Staying indoors can have a negative impact on your immune health. The immune system works best when challenged regularly. That doesn’t happen when we spend time indoors.
- Sharpen Your Focus. In the general population, studies have shown that attention is almost uniformly enhanced by exposure to natural environments. A study published in 2009 found that the same holds true for children with attention deficits.
- Helps Develop a Healthier Diet. Looking for a hobby to get you outside? Gardening is a great way to increase your time outdoors. Not only does gardening keep you active, it provides you with access to healthy fruits and vegetables on a regular basis.
