Below are five steps you can take to clarify what the good life means to you, and how you can apply your strengths to set goals that will lead to greater fulfillment. 1. Clarify your values
- You’re not as alone as you feel. I’ve spoken to people in crisis who truly believed no one cared about them, making them feel ashamed or afraid to open up.
- It’s hard to see solutions when in distress. When you’re in the middle of a crisis, that’s usually the only thing you can see. Again, the desire to avoid pain is completely normal.
- Nothing in life is final — until it’s over. In a crisis, you might feel trapped because you don’t see any way out. You might think you’ve blown your chance to have the life you wanted or permanently lost a friendship that really mattered to you.
- You can make life more meaningful. Many people dealing with suicidal thoughts believe life lacks meaning or see themselves as a burden. Perhaps you live with physical or mental health symptoms that affect your quality of life.
- Life is an invitation to learn. We can learn something from every moment, good or bad.
- Life is not static; it's in constant movement, much like the waves of the ocean. Each wave that comes brings with it new experiences, and each one is different.
- Life is a gift; some people depart too soon and don’t have the fortune to know life. Those who have it should enjoy it.
- Our lives are not only our own. They also belong to those who surround us. We should take care of ourselves because we are important to others—even though we sometimes forget it.
- Happiness. The researchers found that a sense of purpose promoted happiness and well-being among adults 50-90. “Happiness” included a range of positive feelings from pleasure to life satisfaction to the sense of contribution to a larger purpose.
- Healthy habits. Older adults with a sense of purpose were more likely to practice healthy habits, according to the study. For example, participants with high rankings on PIL were more likely to exercise regularly, eat healthy foods, watch less TV, participate in the arts, and avoid sedentary behaviors.
- Stronger personal relationships. Higher ratings for the belief that life is worthwhile were correlated to the likelihood of having a life partner, less risk of divorce, more contact with friends, membership in various organizations, volunteering, and a greater number of close relationships.
- Wealth. In addition to a wealth of benefits of purpose in life, PIL also brought wealth itself. Sense of purpose was associated with greater prosperity, including income, paid employment, and assets, even after taking baseline wealth into account.
