Oct 24, 2024 · Mild cognitive impairment, also known as MCI, often involves the same types of brain changes seen in Alzheimer's disease or other dementias. But in MCI, the changes occur at a lesser degree. Some of these changes have been seen in autopsy studies of people with mild cognitive impairment.
Research has found that having MCI can raise the risk of developing dementia in future, but this depends on the underlying cause. Every year, about one in 10 people who have been diagnosed with MCI develop dementia. For half of people with MCI their symptoms do not get worse or get better.
Research suggests that genetic factors may play a role in who will develop MCI, as they do in Alzheimer's and related dementias. Studies are underway to learn why some people with MCI progress to Alzheimer's and others do not.
