More than three-quarters of all people diagnosed with cancer in the UK are 60 and over. And this is because cancer is a disease of our genes – the bits of DNA code that hold the instructions for all of the microscopic machinery inside our cells.
However, the age-standardized death rate from cancer has declined over time in many countries — due to improvements in diagnosis, research, medical advances, and public health efforts, as well as reductions in risk factors such as smoking and some cancer-causing pathogens.
Cancer Over Time presents international trends in cancer-specific incidence and mortality rates. The underlying data are based on high-quality cancer incidence data, as recorded by one or more subnational or national population-based cancer registries, and national cancer mortality data, extracted from the World Health Organization (WHO) database.
Among the 20 most common causes of cancer death, stomach cancer has shown the fastest decrease in mortality in both females and males over the past decade in the UK. Mortality rates are projected to fall for most types of cancer in the UK between 2023-2025 and 2038-2040.
