1822-24 - Te Rauparaha led Ngāti Toa iwi from Kāwhia to escape the danger of musket wars in the Waikato/King Country region. When Muaūpoko tried to assassinate him, he established Kāpiti Island as his fortress and took terrible revenge on them.
T e Rauparaha, now established at Kapiti, commenced a flourishing trade with passing ships for guns, with a view to invading Te Wai Pounamu (The South Island). Flax and the cultivation of potatoes were in particular demand by passing traders.
Kāpiti, centre of a canoe-crafted empire, gave Te Rauparaha both a fortress and a trading base. Vessels began calling in 1827 and, by the time the trade peaked in the mid-1830s, there were five whaling stations on the island: Waiorua, Rangatira, Taepiro, Wharekohu and Te Kahe Te Rau O Te Rangi.
While Te Rauparaha was attacking the tribes of Horowhenua, Te Pehi Kupe, the senior chief of Ngati Toa, surprised Muaupoko on Kapiti and captured the island. As Ngati Toa were threatened by both Ngati Kahungunu and Ngati Apa, they moved to Kapiti for security.
