Jul 26, 2010 · Missouri State University has had several name changes since it began in 1905 as the Fourth District Normal School. In 1972, the school, then known as Southwest Missouri State College, became Southwest Missouri State University.
The Fourth District Normal School became Southwest Missouri State Teacher's College in 1919 to reflect its regional and academic emphasis. Throughout the interwar period , the college's programs expanded to include liberal arts and sciences in the curriculum, thus facilitating a name change to Southwest Missouri State College in 1945.
Previously known as Southwest Missouri State University, the institution was founded in 1905 and changed it's name in 2005. In 1977, the Southwest Missouri State University Board of Regents and, subsequently, the Missouri General Assembly, designated the name West Plains campus of Southwest Missouri State University to replace Residence Center. In 1981, the legislature enacted a permanent status bill for the campus.
