The overtime system adds two laps after the green flag to get a green flag finish. You can do this repeatedly if the field continues to crash on the restart lap. To clarify, NASCAR has three attempts at a green-white-checkered finish. Also, it only applies before the last lap. Once the white flag flies, the next flag ends the race.
