Since most of the Bishops at that time were Roman Catholic, they resented the fact that the translators had separated the Old Testament Apocrypha from the rest of the Old Testament. Thus, in the fifth edition of the Great Bible, published in 1541, Coverdale’s introduction to the Old Testament Apocrypha was omitted.
Sometime between 1535 and 1540 (the exact dates being uncertain), separate printings were made of Coverdale's translations into English of the psalms. These first versions of his psalm renditions were based mainly or completely upon his translation of the Book of Psalms in the 1535 Coverdale Bible.

- Wisdom of Solomon, written around 50 BCE. This book centers on the importance of Wisdom as related to humans and to God. It may have influenced the famous prologue of the Gospel of John, with wisdom replaced by the “Word.”
Coverdale was the first English translator to introduce chapter summaries, and to separate the Apocrypha from the other Old Testament books. Only some of his phrasing survives in modern English Bibles.
