The Western Round Table on Modern Art (1949) In 2005, while a student at the San Francisco Art Institute, I was introduced to the work of Gregory Bateson, specifically through an essay titled, A Theory of Play and Fantasy (1955).
In 1871 the San Francisco Art Association (SFAA) was founded by local artists and supporters to promote art in the city. In 1874 the SFAA founded the California School of Design (CSD) and began offering classes. This was SFAI in its earliest incarnation.
In this spirit of advancement, in 1949 CSFA Director Douglas MacAgy organized an international conference, The Western Roundtable on Modern Art, which included Marcel Duchamp, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Gregory Bateson. The roundtable aimed to expose “hidden assumptions” and to frame new questions about art.
