The city theatre Reduta in Brno burned down in 1870, and the city council decided to build a new theatre building within a short time period. Thanks to the efforts of then mayor Gustav Winterholler, the decision was taken to build a bigger and better theatre at the place of Obstplatz (today's Malinovský square). [2]

History. The foundation and construction of the Mahen Theatre was initiated by the Brno City Council headed by the mayor Gustav Winterholler. The reason behind the initiative was the absence of a theatre building which would meet the required capacity and technical conditions and, at the same time, would be a symbol of prestige for the city.
The funds required to build a new theatre building were raised by means of collections, bazaars, and tombolas, and between the years of 1910 and 1958 a total of seven architectural competitions concerning design of the new building were held.
In 1882 the construction of the new German Municipal Theatre “Na hradbách” (On the Wall), today’s Mahen Theatre, was finished. Even though Brno was not electrified at that time, the theatre was the first one in Europe to be lit by electric light bulbs.
