Feb 6, 2024 · Because as they were generally unavailable for view, or review – or any critical study – for many decades, the Columbia Screen Gems shorts had a better reputation than the more easily accessible Terrytoons and Famous Studios product which were – in comparison to Disney, Warner Bros and MGM – judged to be inferior entertainments.
Screen Gems continued producing cartoons for Columbia release until it closed in 1946, which included the PHANTASY and COLOR RHAPSODIES (a SILLY SYMPHONIES knock-off) series. It's last cartoon releases appeared in 1949. Shortly after the displeasure with their in-house shorts, Columbia was soon looking for new talent.
Color Rhapsody is a series of usually one-shot animated cartoon shorts produced by Charles Mintz's studio Screen Gems for Columbia Pictures. [1] They were launched in 1934, following the phenomenal success of Walt Disney's Technicolor Silly Symphonies and Warner Bros.' Merrie Melodies.
