- Jeff Traylor, UTSA. Traylor, 55, has been on UH’s wish list since the end of last season when rumors began to swirl that Holgorsen was on the hotseat. A candidate who reportedly interviewed for the Texas A&M job, Traylor had a 12-win season in 2021, 11-win season in 2022, both times winning the Conference USA championship.
- Jon Sumrall, Troy. Sumrall, 41, has gone 21-4 in two seasons at Troy. In his first season as a head coach, Sumrall led Troy to a 12-2 record, Sun Belt title and bowl win over UTSA.
- Will Stein, Oregon. Described as a rising star in the coaching world, Stein, 34, has a reputation for running a spread offense that can pile up points and yardage.
- Tom Herman, Florida Atlantic. UH wouldn’t dare … would they? Following his firing at Texas in 2020, Herman spent two years out of college coaching before taking over at FAU this season.

Holgorsen limped to a 4-8 record in Houston’s first season in the Big 12. For who replaces him at the helm of the Cougars, we take a look at five candidates who make sense.
- UTSA Head Coach Jeff Traylor. Look, Jeff Traylor should already have a Power 5 job (A&M is gonna rue the day they passed him over). UTSA is already paying him $2.8 million per year.
- Kansas State Offensive Coordinator Collin Klein. Houston isn’t luring another sitting Big 12 coach like it did with Holgorsen. But a Big 12 assistant coach?
- Tulane Head Coach Willie Fritz. Look, all he does is win. He has 208 wins as an NCAA coach. He won two NJCAA championships at Blinn College in Texas. He also coached at Sam Houston in Huntsville, Texas, so he knows the turf.
- Texas Special Teams Coach Jeff Banks. CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd reported earlier on Sunday that Banks was a name to watch for this job. Banks’ recruiting acumen is well-respected.

- Barry Odom, Head Coach, UNLV. Thanks to the arrival of Odom, UNLV is one of the most-improved college footballteams in '23. The Rebels finished 9-3, which is the highest win total for the program since it won 11 games in 1984.
- Gary Patterson, Former TCU Head Coach. Patterson has been away from a full-time coaching role since he was dismissed as TCU's head coach in '21. After working in an off-field role at Texas in '22, Patterson spent this year away from the sidelines.
- Will Stein, Offensive Coordinator, Oregon. Stein is a former Louisville quarterback and has spent time in the Lone Star State as an assistant at Lake Travis High School and UTSA.
