Subhūti (Pali: Subhūti; Chinese: 須菩提/须菩提; pinyin: Xūpútí) was one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha. In Theravada Buddhism he is considered the disciple who was foremost in being "worthy of gifts" (Pali: dakkhiṇeyyānaṃ) and "living remote and in peace" (Pali: araṇavihārīnaṃ aggo).
Śāriputra and Moggallāna, two of the foremost disciples of the Buddha, were formerly the foremost disciples of Sañjaya Belaṭṭhaputta, the sceptic. [94] The Pāli canon frequently depicts Buddha engaging in debate with the adherents of rival schools of thought.
The Buddha's most eminent disciples, however, were Śāriputra and Mahāmaudgalyāyana. These two were childhoodfriends who left home to pursue the religious life, at first together, but eventually separating on the agreement that the first to find the true way would seek out the other.
- Shariputra. Śāripūtra was foremost in the development of wisdom (prajna).
- Maudgalyayana. Maudgalyāyana was formost in the development of supernatural powers.
- Mahākāśyapa. Mahākāśyapa was foremost in ascetic training. After the death of Shakyamuni Buddha, he led the First Buddhist council which codified the Buddha's teachings.
- Subhuti. In the Pali tradition, Subhuti is considered the disciple who was foremost in being "worthy of gifts" and "living remote and in peace". In the Sanskrit tradition, he is considered foremost in understanding emptiness (śūnyatā).
The Buddha was the first religious universalist. He told his first disciples to spread the Dhamma far and wide. Go forth for the good of the many, for the happi-ness of the many, out of compassion for the world, for the welfare, the good and the happi-ness of gods and men. Let no two of you go in the same direction.
In Theravada, Two chief disciples refers to Sariputta and Maha Moggallana, the Buddha's closest followers. They played significant roles in teaching and guiding the younger Brethren and were honored for their insights and teachings.
