- Tulsa's origins begin in the late 1820s with the removal of the Creek from their ancestral homes in Georgia and Alabama. After arriving here in 1833 the Lower Creek settled in present Tulsa, negotiating a treaty with the Cherokee and positioning the boundaries between the two nations.

Perryman, who was part Creek, established a business foothold in the rugged frontier until the Civil War. In 1879 the first post office opened on a ranch belonging to one of Lewis’ sons, Josiah Chouteau Perryman, southeast of town. Josiah was appointed Tulsa’s first postmaster.

Prior to its incorporation, Tulsa was located in the Coweta Area, the northeastern-most district of the Creek Tribal Lands. Many of the first families in Tulsa were mixed-blood Creek Indians. One of the most prominent families was the Perryman family.
James M. Hall, who would later be referred to as the 'Father of Tulsa,' marked off Tulsa's first streets, built its first permanent store, organized its first church, school, and government, and served as Tulsa's first Interim Postmaster.
