After European settlements had been made to the south and north, the colonial Province of Maryland was granted by King Charles I to Sir George Calvert (1579–1632), his former Secretary of State in 1632, for settlement beginning in March 1634.
In 1632, King Charles I granted a charter to the second Lord Baltimore, Cecil Calvert for a Catholic colony, Maryland. Maryland soon became a colony of religious diversity madeup of a mix of England’s religious outsiders and members of the Church of England.
Upon his father's death, Cecil became the Second Baron of Baltimore and inherited the colonies and lands owned by his father. King Charles I had approved a request from George Calvert to establish a colony called the Province of Maryland (“Terra Mariae”) in 1632.
