Born at Bury in Lancashire on March 27th, 1856, the eldest son of John Lomax Openshaw, gentleman, and Mary Horrocks, his wife. He was educated at the Bristol Grammar School and began to train as an engineer, but soon abandoned the course for medicine.
Dr. Thomas Horrocks Openshaw, CB, CMG, FRCS, LSA, TD. Born 17th March 1856 in Bury, Lancashire. Married Selina Gertrude Pratt (b.1858, Oxford) in 1890. They had one son and one daughter. Openshaw was educated at Bristol Grammar School.
The kidney was brought to Dr Thomas Horrocks Openshaw, the Curator of the London Pathological Museum, where the kidney could be microscopically examined. The press jumped on the topic and made a circumstantial case that this kidney had been indeed torn from the body of Catherine Eddowes.
