Saint Basil the Great, early Church Father who defended the orthodox faith against the Arian heresy. As bishop of Caesarea, he wrote several works on monasticism, theology, and canon law. He was declared a saint soon after his death.

St. Basil the Great was born at Caesarea of Cappadocia in 330. He was one of ten children of St. Basil the Elder and St. Emmelia. Several of his brothers and sisters are honored among the saints.
St. Basil, born in 329 CE in what is now known as Kayseri (then Caesarea Mazaca), hailed from Cappadocia, an Asia Minor province of the Roman Empire. He was the child of Basil the Elder and Emily, often referred to as Emilia or Emmelia.
