Dec 4, 2010 · I lost an old friend this week, as the celebrated artist Robert Sellar (right) passed away at the age of 90. His loss puts out a light that has shone brightly for many years. I met Robert almost as soon as I joined the staff at Flowerfield Arts Centre in 2004.
Robert Sellar was born in Scotland He moved to Northern Ireland as a child and studied at Belfast College of Art. For a time he taught in schools in Derry and Antrim, and for many years was adviser in art education to the North-Eastern Education Board before retiring in 1984.
Robert Sellar (1828 in Scotland – 1900 in Melbourne, Australia) emigrated from Scotland in 1853 and became a prominent merchant in Melbourne, Australia where he was the business partner of James McCulloch who went on to become a Premier of the state of Victoria.

Sellar is best known for his postmark designs and intricate lino cuts. A number of his works are held in the Flowerfield Arts Centre in Portstewart, which he donated. He also designed the stained glass windows for Castlerock Presbyterian Church.
