Duquesne was a French naval officer during the administrations of Richelieu and Colbert who decisively defeated the combined fleets of Spain and Holland in 1676. After distinguishing himself against the Spanish in the late thirties and early forties he took service with the Swedish navy in 1643 and defeated the Danes.

Ange Duquesne de Menneville, Marquis Duquesne (1700–1778) was the Governor-General of New France from 1752 to 1755. Believing that French interests in the Great Lakes and Upper Mississippi Valley were threatened by British colonial advances in the Ohio Valley, he built a string of forts between Lake Erie and the Ohio Valley.
