Born in 1843, he was apprenticed to Hugh Barclay at the age of 13, but came to prominence 15 years later when he won an international competition.
Sellars was admitted a member of the Glasgow Institute of Architects in 1872. He died at his house, 9 Montgomerie Crescent in Glasgow on 9 October 1888, the result stepping on a rusty nail at the 1888 Glasgow International Exhibition.
James Sellars was a major star among Glasgow’s great Victorian architects, bursting on the scene in 1870 – aged only 26 – with his designs for the Stewart Memorial Fountain in Kelvingrove Park. Sellars went on to produce some of the city’s finest churches, schools, recreational and commercial buildings until his premature death in 1888.
Making his name with his competition winning gothic designs for the Stewart Memorial Fountain, Kelvingrove Park (1872), he produced buildings of every type and style in Glasgow and elsewhere, and participated in a number of important competitions throughout his career.
Mar 10, 2024 · Fire destroyed the entire Buchanan Street warehouse on 3 November 1883 and this led to a new building designed by architect, James Sellars, at 111 Union Street. Sellars had previously been responsible for the design of the new Kent Road cabinet-making factory in 1872.
