Pacific Gas and Electric Company and other energy companies in the state are regulated by the California Public Utilities Commission. The CPUC was created by the state Legislature in 1911.
PG&E is one of six regulated, investor-owned electric utilities (IOUs) in California; the other five are PacifiCorp, Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas & Electric, Bear Valley Electric, and Liberty Utilities. [7]
The CPUC establishes policies and rules for electric-ity and natural gas rates and services provided by private utilities in California.
