Aloysius Snuffleupagus (/ ˌ s n ʌ f əl ˈ ʌ p ə ɡ ə s /), more commonly known as Mr. Snuffleupagus or Snuffy for short, is one of the characters on Sesame Street, a PBS/HBO educational television program for young children.
Mr. Snuffleupagus is a full-bodied Muppet character who lives with his family in a cave just off of Sesame Street. His species is Snuffleupagus as well as his last name. Although his friends call him Snuffy, his full name is Aloysius Snuffleupagus.
Michael Earl (September 10, 1959 – December 23, 2015) was a puppeteer who performed in many Muppet and non-Muppet productions, most notably as Mr. Snuffleupagus on Sesame Street in the early 1980s. Earl joined the Muppets in 1978 at the age of 19.
He is best known for his work on Sesame Street, having performed the characters of Telly Monster, Mr. Snuffleupagus, Oscar the Grouch's pet worm Slimey, Oscar's niece Irvine, Buster the Horse, and Shelley the Turtle for over 40 years.
At 19, Earl was hired sight-unseen by Jim Henson for The Muppet Movie and subsequently won the role of Mr. Snuffleupagus on Sesame Street (replacing Jerry Nelson, the originator), also creating the roles of Forgetful Jones, Oscar the Grouch's pet worm Slimey the Worm, Poco Loco, Polly Darton and the Honkers.
Mr. Snuffleupagus was first introduced on "Sesame Street" in 1971, during the show's third season. At that time, he was portrayed as Big Bird's imaginary friend. Big Bird would often talk to Mr. Snuffleupagus and play games with him, but none of the other characters on the show ever saw him.
