John Smith, real name Michael, is a main character in the Prime Video spy thriller Mr. & Mrs. Smith. He is portrayed by Donald Glover.
John Smith was in the military at some point and underwent basic training. He was apparently dishonorably discharged, though he states that he personally wouldn't call it "dishonorable." He states that he has killed one person accidentally and 13 on purpose.

"First Date"
John applies for work with a mysterious organization. He is subjected to a series of questions querying everything from his past working history in the military to whether or not he has ever said "I love you" to a woman. Afterwards, he arrives at a fancy brownstone home in Manhattan. There he meets a woman who introduces herself as Jane Smith. He introduces himself as "John Smith." The two of them discover a marriage certificate and learn that for professional purposes they are now the legally married couple "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." They also discover that the home is stocked with weapons and find a computer with a message from the individual who recruited them, Hihi, instructing them to follow a woman and intercept a package, then hand it off at a set of a provided coordinates. The two turn to domestic affairs, including which of them should sleep in which room. They also discover a cat, which apparently came with the house. John later meets Jane in her room and is wearing no shirt, but he claims it is only because he was warm downstairs. The next day, the two turn their attention to their first assignment. They try to spot the mysterious package described in the instructions, but only see her with a tablet reading "ten places to travel alone." John asks Jane if she applied for high risk and she agrees that she did. He says that it's strange, that he expected something different for their first mission, possibly something involving lasers and gunfire. She suggests that they're just easing them in, that it's always like this at a stakeout at first. They talk about how they were recruited - a mysterious e-mail from "Hihi" and how they weren't told that they'd be paired up with someone until the very last interview. Jane explains that you draw less attention as a couple, that it's an old KGB tactic. They discuss their personal lives a bit until they notice that their target is on the move. They observe her making contact with a man, but still don't see any package. As they continue to tail, they continue discussing their personal histories and behaviors and wonder what will happen if they fail the mission.

After signing up for high risk work with the company, John for all intents and purposes finds himself legally married to Jane Smith. The two agree to keep things strictly professional at first, but soon find themselves developing feelings for each other.
Denise (Mother)
Despite strict orders from the company against it and the strong possibility of it endangering her, John remains in contact with his mother, Denise. She does not have any idea what he is actually now doing for a living, nor about his relationship with Jane. John is highly attached to his mother and calls her several times a day. He feels responsible to her as the only man in her life following the death of her husband (his father).
