Born into a wealthy family in Hamilton, Elizabeth is the middle daughter of William and Grace Thatcher. She has two sisters: younger sister Julie and older sister Viola. While growing up, Elizabeth and her sisters had a strict Swiss governess named Frau Bustenhaller.
