Anthony "Tony" John Soprano, portrayed by James Gandolfini, is a fictional character and the protagonist of the HBO crime drama television series The Sopranos. He is a member of the Italian-American Mafia and, later in the series, acts as the boss of the fictional DiMeo crime family of North Jersey.
Involved in the organization since his teenage years and made in 1982, Anthony Soprano served as a caporegime for over 15 years. Following the death of Jackie Aprile, he and the other capos agreed to name Junior Soprano the new boss, but have Tony, who would be underboss in title, run the family as an informal street boss.
