What happened to Island Records?
Island Records is a Jamaican multinational record label owned by Universal Music Group. It was founded in 1959 by Chris Blackwell, Graeme Goodall, and Leslie Kong in Jamaica, [1] and was eventually sold to PolyGram in 1989.
Christopher Percy Gordon Blackwell OJ (born 22 June 1937) [1] is a Jamaican-British former record producer and the founder of Island Records, [2] which has been called "one of Britain's great independent labels."
In the UK, Blackwell distributed the records himself, driving up the newly-opened M1 motorway in his Mini Cooper to serve the West Indian immigrant communities in London, Birmingham and Manchester. Not every artist he signed saw their records released on Island.
About. Since Chris Blackwell first started Island Records in Jamaica in 1959, it has remained one of the world’s most legendary record labels and a coveted destination for new and established artists across genres.
In 1967 Blackwell and his partner David Betteridge relocated Island to the bohemian surroundings of London’s Notting Hill and redirected the company’s focus toward the emerging rock audience, signing album-oriented acts with a college-based market.
